Q: How long will these dry mixes stay fresh ? A: Our dessert mixes are best used within two to three months of purchase. They will stay fresher if kept in an airtight container (such as Tupperware). If they harden, you can break them up by hand or in a small food processor before mixing them. You may need to allow them to sit for a few minutes during mixing to dissolve them completely. This hardening occurs because of the moisture content in the fruit powders, which are made from real fruit and contain no preservatives. Our dip and spread mixes will easily last six months to a year. After that, they can still be used, but may not have as much flavor. For best results, the dry mixes should be stored in a cool, dark place such as a pantry or cupboard. They can also be stored in the refrigerator or freezer to help retain freshness (place mixes inside a heavy plastic bag and close tightly before refrigerating or freezing). Q: Do I have to use sour cream to make the dips, or can I use something else ? A: You can definitely use something other than sour cream. You can substitute yogurt for all or part of the sour cream. You may want to try a combination of 8 ounces (227 grams) of mayonnaise and 8 ounces (227 grams) of sour cream for a richer tasting dip. Some people like using cottage cheese instead of sour cream - you may want to use a blender to make it smooth. Just use your imagination to come up with your own preferred method. A: Yes, they taste great this way. Some low fat or fat free sour cream and cream cheese have a slightly different texture, so you may notice a difference in that respect. Also, the dip or spread may not taste quite as rich as it does when made using a full fat sour cream or cream cheese. However, if you're watching your fat intake, you'll enjoy having a wide range of flavors to try. Q: Do I have to use cream cheese to make the spreads, or can I use something else ? A: You don't have to use cream cheese to make the spreads. You can substitute cottage cheese, but you might want to use a blender to make it smooth and easy to spread. You also may want to try using butter to make some interesting herb butters. Use your imagination - and then share the results with us ! A: Sure ! You can do one of two things. Your first choice is to add less of the mix the next time you make the dip (or spread), which will make the product less hot. If you prefer, you can add more sour cream (or cream cheese) when making it, which will also make the product less hot. If you already have a dip (or spread) made, but it's too hot to eat, just add more sour cream (or cream cheese) to lower the intensity of the heat. Some of our spicy products will get hotter as they sit in your refrigerator, so if you have something you made several days ago, you might notice that it's hotter than it was when you first made it. Q: Once I have made one of your products, how long will it keep in my refrigerator ? A: Our dips and spreads will keep nicely in your refrigerator for two weeks. Sometimes they'll keep longer than that. Since sour cream may separate as it sits in the refrigerator, either pour the liquid out or stir it in before serving dips. Our desserts will keep well for up to a week, but they might start to dry out slightly after three or four days. Keep in mind that some of our spicy products will get hotter as they sit in your refrigerator. If they become too hot for your taste, just add more sour cream or cream cheese to cool the intensity of the heat. Q: Are your products compatible with a low sodium diet ? A: Our dip and spread mixes contain a small amount of salt. We try to keep salt content to a minimum, and only add enough to bring out the taste. Some of them also include imitation bacon bits, which contain additional sodium. Some of our mixes use real powdered cheese, which contains the same amount of sodium as the original cheese. There is no added salt in the dessert mixes. All ingredients are listed in our product descriptions. Q: Are your dessert mixes suitable for someone with diabetes ? A: Definitely not ! These products contain sugar and should not be used by diabetics. Q: Are your mixes compatible with a vegetarian diet ? A: Yes. There are no meat products of any kind in our mixes. The imitation bacon bits are a soy based product. Vegans can use our seasonings with tofu rather than sour cream or cream cheese. |
